An experience that will humble anyone in my opinion is that of an intern, especially a non-paid internship. Now we all watch Devil Wears Prada, but most likely there is no accessory closet or Prada hand me downs going around in your office. This is real life and it almost feels like the glossier the pages are for the publication the lower you are on the totem pole. I was blessed with the opportunity to intern at a newspaper and now a magazine and there is a big difference. Some look at newspaper as the dinosaurs of journalism and new media, but there is a sense of family at these publications. Magazines are glorified because of the fashion spreads, the celeb events and feel of being exclusive. But as an intern, you don’t always get the icing on top of the cake, you are sometimes in the back frosting the cake. But this builds integrity right? Maybe! It sometimes makes you question is this the business I want to be in? Of course it is…all those lectures and seminars you attended in undergraduate are all for the free goodie bags you get at these events, and lets not forget the the moment you see your byline. I will tell anyone seeing By: De’Marja Patrick, will never get old to me and that’s why it is so important to take the good with the bad, and hold on to the important aspects to build your own business in the future. Some days I am discouraged, but I have to remember, any one that hires me, is hiring me to be the best at whatever they request, whether it is for a bagel or coffee run, we’ll never know, but I keep making strides. Any situation I have to remember what’s important, whether or not I am just a paper pusher for someone, I am getting just as much from it, if not more. Some days I find myself blasting the most obscene music when I leave the office or repeating the famous saying from Devil Wears Prada, ” I love my job, I love my job.” But I return the next day, having made one more stride to my personal accomplishments.
I am working hard to have my portfolio represent the best "silhouettes" of things to come in my career.
I am a witty, sassy, straight from the hip recent journalism grad, with a passion for fashion trends, styling and assembling beautiful words. Enjoy.
